19-year-old formally charged in the shooting death of Topeka man
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay announced that formal criminal charges have been filed against Tayvian Smith, 19, of Topeka, in connection with the homicide of Devin David-Lee Hoadley, 22.
On April 13, 2026, Topeka Police Department officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 200 block of Southeast 29th Street in Topeka.
When officers arrived, they found Devin David-Lee Hoadley suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died due to his injuries.
During the investigation, Tayvian Smith, 19, was identified as the suspect. He was interviewed and taken into custody on April 26.
On May 1, formal criminal charges were filed by the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office against Smith for:
- Voluntary Manslaughter- Level 3 Felony
- Aggravated Battery – Level 7 Felony
The charges are allegations of criminal conduct only.
Smith remains in the Shawnee County Department of Corrections under a $1 million bond.
