City crews work to repair water main breaks along Wanamaker Rd, hope to prevent future breaks

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- City water crews are hard at work Labor Day Monday, fixing water main breaks that closed several businesses along Wanamaker Road.

A water main broke around 3 a.m. early Monday at 17th and Wanamaker. When the water was turned back on a second water main broke in front of Red Lobster near 21st Street.

Just after noon water was shut off along Wanamaker between 21st and 17th Streets. Crews were cutting new valves to prevent future breaks along the road.

The city's Water Department's PR Specialist Ryan Wollaway says that when the water is turned back on after a break, the high pressure of the main finds weak spots.

Wollaway says about 10 businesses were without power Monday afternoon, including four restaurants. Water is not expected to be turned back on until early Tuesday morning. m
