(WIBW) - An ethanol plant was among structures damaged by a tornado that rolled through Republic County Wednesday afternoon.
Lisa Strnad, accounting manager for the Nesika Energy facility at Scandia, says their grain receiving area and two of their three grain storage bins were destroyed by an apparent tornado that hit after 5 pm Wednesday. Strnad said four workers took cover in the plant's storm shelter and are unhurt.
Strnad says the facility's processing equipment is all intact and there are no leaks. However, she says operations will be down at least two weeks and possibly up to three months while the grain receiving area is rebuilt. In addition, she says engineers will be brought in to double check the facility, to ensure all equipment is functioning properly and safely.
The facility typically produces about 30,000 gallons of ethanol a day.
Strnad says the Premium Feeders lot across the road from the Nesika facility also suffered substantial damage, including cattle that were killed.
In addition, several homes in the Scandia area were damaged. The Republic County Sheriff's office says a portion of Highway 36 was closed for a time Wednesday night, due to downed power lines.
