A second death at Cheney Lake over the holiday weekend claims the life of a Wichita teenager.
According to the Kansas Wildlife and Parks, 16-year-old Gabriel Salinas, of Wichita, was swimming with a friend around 2:00 p.m. Saturday when the two left the Giefer Creek Swimming Area to try and swim to a no wake buoy.
Salinas went under water and never came back up. His friend tried to rescue him, but was unable too.
Park Rangers located the body of Salinas using sonar, and the Cheney Fire and Rescue Dive Team recovered the body around 4:00 p.m. Saturday.
