One man hospitalized after running himself over during police pursuit

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A man trying to flee from Topeka Police ended up being run over by the vehicle they were driving.

Just before 3:30 Sunday morning, Topeka Police observed a dark colored SUV west bound on SW 6th street, they thought it may be a suspect vehicle that the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office was looking for. Sheriff's deputies were looking for a 1997 Chevy Tahoe in relation to a domestic call.

An officer saw the vehicle and attempted to stop it after the driver ran a red light at SW 6th and Topeka. The driver initiated a pursuit as he approached SW 6th and Washburn, the driver then opened the door to the vehicle and jumped out of the driver's side door. When he did so, the vehicle ran him over.

The driver has been identified as 30-year-old Ryan Barranco. He was transported to a local hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.
