Memory Tree Lights Up For Lost Loved Ones

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- Topekans honored lost loved ones through a Capital City tradition Sunday.

A number of people joined Midland Care’s 2014 Memory Tree for a ceremony of remembrance. Families honored those that have passed on with donations of $25 or more. Each donation included a medallion and luminary with the name if their friend or family member that will be placed in the Memory Tree Garden.

“There are many people who come every year,” says Karren Weichert, CEO. “There was just a gentleman who says he’s been coming since his wife died in 2009. It’s an important part of their holiday season to them now and for those who have lost someone recently it’s very important because there’s so much hub-bub around the holidays that sometimes you get lost in all of that. And yet people are hurting because they have lost somebody that they love.”

The luminaries are lit every night and will stay permanently in place through January 2015.
