Early morning fire in SE Topeka causes $7,000 in damage

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) Investigators have provided 13 NEWS with additional information on the early Monday morning house fire in Southeast Topeka.

Shawnee County Dispatch said a structure fire was reported at 2940 SE Illinois around 1:30 a.m. Monday.

Area residents called 911 after seeing smoke coming from the structure.

When fire crews arrived they found smoke and flames coming from the south side of the home.

Fire crews had to enter the structure by force and then searched the two apartments, however no occupants were found and the fire was quickly extinguished.

At this time, officials say the fire cause was "undetermined, pending additional investigation"

The original source was determined as a mattress in the southeast first floor bedroom.

The estimated dollar loss was $7,000: $6,000 structural and $1,000 in content loss.
