Searchers Recover Body At Kanopolis Lake

MARQUETTE, Kan. (AP) _ Crews have recovered a body matching the description of an 18-year-old man reported missing while kayaking on Kanopolis Lake.

Ellsworth County Sheriff Tracy Ploutz says the body was found Friday morning in the southwest part of the lake.

The Salina Journal reports ( ) that Derek Wheeler of Salina has been missing since early Tuesday when he set out with two other people in kayaks from Sand Plum Campground.

A man fishing from a boat Friday morning noticed something at the shoreline and notified searchers in law enforcement boats. Ploutz says officers confirmed it was a body. The sheriff says Wheeler's family has been notified.

MARQUETTE, Kan. (AP) - Crews are searching Kanopolis Lake in central Kansas for a teenager who went missing while kayaking with friends.

Ellsworth County Sheriff Tracy Ploutz says three friends were camping at the lake when they decided to kayak between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Ploutz says wind might have caused one of the kayaks to tip. When the other boys went to assist, their kayaks also tipped over. Two of the three boys were able to make it back to shore.
