WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) — Police investigating the alleged kidnapping and rape of a Wichita woman also discovered an alligator at the couple's home.
A 33-year-old woman told police her husband tied her up and held her hostage in a shed behind their home near 35th and Arkansas. She said he then raped her on several occasions.
A police report obtained by KAKE News shows the woman reports her husband also kicked and punched her, held a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her.
"We think we do a good job of watching each others' yards," said neighbor Tony Jaso. "When you hear that, it just amazes you, makes you think twice about what you see."
The woman escaped just before midnight Thursday and somehow got to a QuikTrip near Broadway and Murdock where she found an off-duty police officer.
"The officer immediately noticed some injuries to her face," said Wichita Police Lt. James Espinoza. "He began to visit with her about what had happened."
When police arrived at the house, they found a three-foot alligator and chickens, which violate city ordinances.
"It's really surprising knowing that can happen just across the street, " said Jaso. "Those fences keep everybody from looking into the yard."
Police have issued an arrest warrant for the woman's 47-year-old husband. He has not yet been located.
