ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) _ Firefighters say six people are dead and
one is injured after an early-morning house fire in St. Joseph.
Fire Inspector Steve Henrichson said there were no smoke alarms
in the home, which was destroyed by the fire. Firefighters believe
four children and two adults were killed, and the father of the
family is hospitalized.
No names have been released.
Henrichson said the family would have survived if there had been
one working smoke alarm in the house.
The man jumped from a window on the second floor, where all the
dead were found.
Investigators are searching for the cause of the slow-burning
fire that appeared to have started on the first floor near an
electrical outlet where a window air-conditioning unit was plugged
The initial call went out at 5:32 a.m. and a second alarm was
sounded as soon as the first truck arrived. The flames were brought
under control by about 6:40 a.m.
