MAPLE CITY, Kan. -- An eight-year-old boy has been released from the hospital following an accidental shooting late Friday morning in Cowley County.

The incident happened near Maple City, which is just east of Arkansas City.

Cowley County Sheriff Don Read says the boy was target shooting with his father and 10-year-old brother when a bullet from a .22 caliber rifle ricocheted and hit the eight-year-old in the chest.

Family members were en route to an Ark City hospital with the boy when EMS met them and took the boy the rest of the way.

The boy was then taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. A spokesperson said the boy has been released from the hospital.
