The Kansas Congressional Delegation is Divided on Embryonic Stem Cell Research

The delegation is divided on if they should increase federal support for embryonic stem cell research.

Democrats Nancy Boyda and Dennis Moore voted for the bill, which passed on a 253 to 174 U.S. house vote.

Republicans Jerry Moran and Todd Tiahrt voted against the bill.

Stem cell research typically involves the destruction of frozen embryos created for in vitro fertilization.

Anit-abortion lawmakers and supporters generally opposed the research because they don't believe their taxes should pay for it.

While proponents argue the research is done on embryos that would otherwise be discarded from fertility clinics anyway.
