Authorities Confirm Death Of 7-Year-Old Girl Pulled From Lake Shawnee

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Shawnee County authorities confirmed Monday afternoon that a 7-year-old girl who was pulled from Lake Shawnee Saturday night later died.

Shawnee County Park Police Chief Mike Cope said people in the campground area on the east side of the lake flagged down a park police officer around 6 pm Saturday night and reported Alonna Elane Lake was missing. The officer notified the Shawnee County Sheriff's office and other emergency personnel for assistance investigating.

A campground patron found Alonna roughly 30 minutes later, face down in an embankment behind the west side of campgrounds. Cope says that patron and others immediately started CPR and continued until Shawnee Heights Fire and AMR personnel took over and transported Alonna to the hospital.

Cope says Alonna could not be revived and was pronounced dead at 7:31 pm Saturday.

Cope says officers have spoken with people at the campground and no one recalls seeing Alonna at the water's edge. Their investigation continues but Cope says foul play is not suspected.

The Shawnee County Coroner was conducting an autopsy.
