25-year-old Michael Wirtz, of Topeka was booked into the Shawnee County jail Saturday for two counts of aggravated assault, one of them against a police officer, and one count of aggravated battery.
The incident happened about 2:30 Saturday morning. A fight broke out at the complex on 21st and Macvicar. Police believe shots were fired in an apartment and later outside the complex.
When police arrived, they found an Arizona man who had allegedly been pistol-whipped by Wirtz. Wirtz fled the scene on foot when officers arrived, resulting in a foot chase.
During the chase, Wirtz allegedly made motions as if he were reaching for a pistol before officers subdued him. Officer Chris Bowers was assaulted during the arrest. Wirtz remains in custody in lieu of $250,000 bond.
