Grand Jury Refuses to Indict Kan. Abortion Doctor

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ A Kansas grand jury has declined to indict one of the nation's only late-term abortion providers.

The grand jury announced Wednesday that it did not find enough evidence to indict Dr. George Tiller on any crime related to abortion laws.

In a written statement, the panel said that unless the Legislature amends state law and provides clearer guidelines, it is unlikely any grand jury will indict Tiller.

Abortion opponents forced Sedgwick County to create the grand jury to investigate Tiller. They contend Tiller has violated a 1998 law restricting late-term abortions.

Kansas is one of six states that allows citizens to petition for grand juries.
