Man Spared Death Penalty in Murder of Pregnant Teen

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ A Sedgwick County jury has spared Ted Burnett from a death sentence for killing a 14-year-old pregnant teenager.

After deliberating for less than three hours, the jury decided Wednesday he should serve life in prison without parole for the 2006 killing Chelsea Brooks. The girl was nine months pregnant when the father of the baby allegedly paid Burnett $500 to have her killed.

Judge Ben Burgess set Burnett for formal sentencing on June 25.

Burnett winked at the court gallery as he left the courtroom in handcuffs.
