KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WIBW) -- The Washburn women's basketball team topped Emporia State, 61-53, in a postseason edition of the Turnpike Tussle during the MIAA Tournament quarterfinals on Friday.
Washburn notched four players in double-figure scoring, including Nicole Murugarren with 15, Hunter Bentley with 14, Alexis McAfee with 12 and Reagan Phelan with 10.
Defense was also the name of the game for the Ichabods as they held the Hornets to a season-low 17 field goals and kept ESU below .275 shooting for just the second time this season.
Emporia State was led by Tyra Jones with 21 points and 11 rebounds, and by Jessica Wayne with 12 points and ten rebounds.
In addition, Wayne notched two steals and broke Emily Bloss' and Aneta Kausaite's single season record with 107.
The Ichabods move on to face Fort Hays State in Saturday's semifinals at 6 p.m. at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. The Hornets wait until Sunday night's NCAA Selection Show at 9 p.m. to learn their seeding in the tournament.
