Washburn women thwart Central Missouri comeback, 62-57

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Washburn women's basketball team knocked off the defending national champion Central Missouri Jennies on Saturday, 62-57.

The Ichabods improved to 2-0 in the MIAA and 4-4 on the season.

Hunter Bentley led Washburn in scoring with 15 points, followed by Alexis McAfee with 12 points. Both women combined for seven steals, as well, helping to force 21 Central Missouri turnovers.

The Jennies went on a 8-0 run to close out the third quarter and opened the fourth threatening. From there, Washburn maintained a five-point margin for the win.

Saturday also marked Washburn head coach Ron McHenry's 430th win, putting him just two wins shy of surpassing Patty Dick as the all-time winningest coach in program history.
