Washburn surges past Lincoln 49-27, honors Dwane Simmons

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - It wasn't exactly pretty at times, but it was enough to start Washburn football in the win column.

The Ichabods overcame seven turnovers to defeat Lincoln 49-27. They traded blows with the Blue Tigers in the first half, going into halftime tied at 21. But in the second, Washburn outscored Lincoln 28-6 to get the win.

Taylon Peters gashed his way on the ground to 98 yards and two touchdowns. Washburn Rural alumnus Collin Wilson had five catches for 68 yards, one touchdown and a catch that will surely go down as one of the best of the year.

The Ichabods also honored former teammate Dwane Simmons, who was killed in an April shooting. Defensive back Alvin Houston wore Simmons' old number, 17, in honor of Simmons. He would have been a senior this season.
