Washburn looks to continue 9-game winning streak over UNK on senior day

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- For the Washburn Ichabod football team, hosting a team it's beat nine-straight times seems like a pretty good way to end the season.

But the Ichabods aren't overlooking Nebraska-Kearney. Not when the Lopers lead the MIAA in rushing yards per game, rushing touchdowns and rushing attempts.

"They're much better than they were last year," said senior linebacker Austin Tillman. "They're very explosive; they can make big plays."

The accolades mean a tough challenge for Tillman and the Washburn defense. But they haven't won nine-straight games by accident.

The Ichabods have outscored the Lopers 314-135 in those last nine games, with UNK's last win over Washburn happening in 1985.

"I just want to finish it off good," Tillman said. "Not just for me but for all of the seniors and for all of the guys knowing this could be possibly our last game."

"We want to win for the seniors," said head coach Craig Schurig. "The team we're playing is very good so it's a great challenge. I just want to see us play well. I want to see us play with the enthusiasm that the game deserves, and play for each other.

"When a football team plays for each other, they play so much harder, and that's what we're after."

A win over Nebraska-Kearney would give Washburn its third-straight winning season and the 13th in Schurig's 17-year tenure with the program.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Yager Stadium.
