Washburn falls 17-16 to UNK after late field goal

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A late field goal by University of Nebraska-Kearney kicker Brian Covarrubias lifted the Lopers over Washburn in the Ichabods' final game of the season.

Washburn took a 16-14 lead after on the last of three Perry Schmiedeler field goals with 4:34 to play. The Ichabod defense stopped the Lopers fourth quarter comeback drive on downs, but a personal foul against Washburn turned a 4th and 2 into a first down.

From there, UNK went on to make the game-winning field goal with eight seconds left.

Senior linebacker Derrick McGreevy led the Ichabod defense with 18 tackles, putting him at 316 for his career--eighth all-time at Washburn. Austin Tillman, senior linebacker, notched 16 tackles, nudging him over the 300-tackle mark and placing him ninth all-time.

Quarterback Mitch Schurig went 16 of 30 for 126 yards through the air. Running back Will Evans led Washburn on the ground, finishing with a career-high 133 yards on 17 carries.

JJ Brania-Hopp reeled in four catches for 36 yards and a touchdown, completing his season with 1,144 yards and nine touchdowns. His receiving yards total is third on the Ichabod single-season chart, and his 2,147 career receiving yards ranks sixth.

Schmiedeler moved to second all-time on the Ichabod scoring charts with his three field goals.
