PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (WIBW) - Topeka native Gary Woodland got off to a strong start at the U.S. Open on Thursday.

Woodland shot a first-round 68 at Pebble Beach, putting him at 3-under heading into day two. That puts him in a tie for eighth on the leaderboard, as he sits three strokes back of leader Justin Rose, who is at 6-under.

The former KU golfer was hot on the front nine, recording four birdies. He ended that first half with a bogey before staying steady at par the rest of the way through.

Woodland will tee off his second round at 3:58 p.m. on Friday. He's paired with Shane Lowry and Tyrrell Hatton.
