Special Olympians from Topeka are doing just that at the Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle. The event opened July 1.
Rodnel Turner had quite a haul in powerlifting. He took a gold in deadlift and silver in squat. He added a bronze in combined weight, by adding a fourth-place finish for bench press.
In the pool, Bekah Henderson struck gold in the 200 free. She also swam on a fifth-place relay Wednesday, with one more competition slated for Thursday.
James Franklin tore up the bocce course, scoring silver in the individual event. He also teamed with Amber Cooper to take fifth in doubles play Wednesday. Amber earned fifth individually. They'll both be part of Thursday's team competition.
Kansas bowlers also picked up a few medals. Topekan Ed Lee is one of their coaches.
