Topeka Zoo orangutans make their Super Bowl picks

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Topeka Zoo had some fun ahead of the Super Bowl, allowing their orangutans to make their picks in the big game.

Zoo staff decked out the orangutan’s exhibit with red, white and yellow streamers, and in the middle…two boxes with the logos of the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers.

The mother/son duo of Rudy and Bumi were the first to enter and explore their supped up setting.

Each box was filled with yummy treats.

Mama Rudy was the first to take a shot at the boxes, looking each one over very carefully, but in the end picking the 49ers.

Bumi was short to follow by grabbing the Chiefs box.

Zoo Director Brendan Wiley says there is a perfect explanation as to why they made their picks the way they did.

“Orangutan mothers really look out for their young and we knew quite obviously that Rudy was getting the 49ers box out of the way so her son Bumi could clearly pick the Chiefs as the winner,” said Wiley.

Wiley says they are always excited to include their animals in big events like this.
