TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Championship moments have become routine at Seaman.
Seaman baseball coach Steve Bushnell has be a part of 9 State Championship teams while with the Vikings.
“It’s just been a great run.” Seaman baseball coach Steve Bushnell said.
Over the past two decades, there have been countless players.
“Just all the success that we’ve had is pretty mind-boggling.” Bushnell said. “Just had an unselfish group of players and had so many talented teams. You know, wonderful coaches that I’ve had that have been there by my side.”
But, the one constant has been head coach Steve Bushnell.
“It’s just been a great run and I truly enjoy representing the Seaman program.” Bushnell said. “It’s a collection of all those things that you put together and it made for a championship type program.”
However, the end of the road is over the horizon. Bushnell will become the new Seaman Athletic Director come next school year.
“We’ve had a great Athletic Director here in Brad Dietz.” Bushnell said. “I know I have big shoes to fill. People are going to rely on me to make some tough decisions. So, it’ll be a new role for me, but one I’m excited about.”
An unfortunate trade off means the ole ball coach will leave the dug out for good after this year.
“It was tough to step away from the baseball side of it.” Bushnell said. “I’ve been able to wear that uniform for another 3 years. There’s not another sport that allows you to do that. It’ll be different, but it’ll be excited for me. Whoever that person is that gets to be in that seat a year from now, I’ll do nothing more than try to give them my support. I’ll have to cut them loose and go.”
In this new role, he aims to hoist trophies not just on the diamond, but throughout Vikings athletics.
“I would love nothing more than continue to see not only our baseball program, but all of our programs to be able to have the success that we’ve had. That would be a highlight for me and bring a lot of joy to being the Athletic Director.”
