(WIBW) - Emporia High School's Matthew East is WIBW's Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
East is a track and field athlete for the Spartans, running in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. He went to the state championships for the event in his sophomore and junior years, and was a part of the 4x400 meter relay team that finished in second at state last year.
He is also a member of the Emporia High Spartan Pride Band as a trombone player and section leader.
In terms of extracurricular activites, East is a part of the following clubs and organizations: Theater Club, Psychology Club, Student Council Senior Class, National Honor Society and Emporia Amateur Radio Society.
East carries a 4.0 GPA. He's a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and will serve on a two-year mission after graduating from Emporia. Once he returns, he intends to study biomedical engineering at the University of Kansas.
