TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- On Monday, Washburn Rural standout cross country runner Jaybe Shufelberger was announced as the Gatorade Kansas Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year.

Shufelberger was recognized for her athletic accomplishments as well as her academic achievements after maintaining a weighted 4.14 GPA. She signed her National Letter of Intent to compete in cross country and track and field at Kansas State this fall.

The award also makes her a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year award, which is to be announced in February.

Shufelberger was Kansas' only girl to qualify for a national championship meet this season, and placed fifth at the Nike Cross Nationals Midwest Regional championships. She also took second in the KSHSAA 6A State Championships.

Shufelberger joins two-time winner Avery Clifton as the only Junior Blue girls to receive the honor.
