(WIBW) - Kyle Zimmer's first taste of Major League Baseball did not last very long.

Eight games into the season, the Royals announced they have optioned the pitcher to Triple-A Omaha and recalled Glenn Sparkman. Zimmer had made three big-league appearances in relief this year.

In two innings of work in those chances, Zimmer struggled with his command. He walked five batters while compiling an ERA of 9.00.

Zimmer was the fifth overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft. The right-handed pitcher has dealt with multiple injuries throughout his career, but had a strong spring training with an ERA of 0.71 in 12.2 innings pitched leading into this season and his MLB debut.

Meanwhile. Sparkman pitched just one inning for Triple-A Omaha this season. Last season with Kansas City, he had an ERA of 4.46 in 38.1 innings of work. Sparkman had 27 strikeouts and 15 walks.
