KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WIBW) - The Royals have designated outfielder Billy Hamilton for assignment and called up Brett Phillips to take his place.

Kansas City announced the move on Friday as Hamilton continued to struggle this season. His batting average of .211 and on-base percentage of .275 are the lowest marks of his career.

Hamilton came to the Royals as a free agent on a one-year deal in December of 2018. The speedster had spent the previous six seasons with the Cincinnati Reds.

Phillips comes back to the majors after hitting .240 with 18 home runs and 54 RBI in Triple-A Omaha this season. He did hit five of those homers in just 12 games for the month of August.

The outfielder did play 36 games for the Royals last year, hitting just .188.
