Royal Valley's Kyle Porter leaves to coach Hays High School girls hoops

(WIBW) - After guiding Royal Valley girls basketball to its first state championship ever, Kyle Porter is heading out for a new job.

Hays High School principal Martin Straub tweeted an announcement welcoming Porter as the new girls basketball coach for the school on Thursday. A couple hours later, Porter made his own Twitter announcement, thanking the Royal Valley community.

"Bittersweet day," Porter tweeted. "It has been a joy to serve RV the past 6 years. Thankful for the friendships created, players coached & parents & community members who have supported our program. Can’t wait to see what the next chapter entails for the Panthers. Thank you
@RV337!!"

Porter took over a Panther program that had gone through seven consecutive losing seasons. He led it to a 3A runner-up finish in 2018 before breaking through for the first state title in program history and the first girls team state championship in school history in 2019.

The 55-52 overtime victory over Cheney delivered Royal Valley's first state championship in any sport since 1974.
