TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Topeka Pilots have agreed to terms on a new lease that will keep the hockey team playing at the Stormont Vail Events Center for their upcoming season.
Head coach and general manager Simon Watson announced the news at a team summer social event on Wednesday night.
"It's a step in the right direction to keep hockey here for our fans and our players coming back," Watson said. "But for what they're doing here at the Stormont Vail Events Center, it's an incredible thing.
Watson said there will be continued renovations and improvements made to the arena. In his speech making the announcement, he mentioned the team's goal is to stay as a tenant in the Stormont Vail Events Center and thrive in this market.
He believes the team started to do so more last season, referencing more fans coming out to games as it got later in the year.
"We had a really good push in attendance last year at the end of the year in March," Watson said. "We look at that surge at the end of the year and just look to continue that momentum."
The Pilots will kick off their next season at home on Sept. 13 against the Odessa Jackalopes.
