Nelson's Eagles beat Caldwell 55-26 in Olpe's Class 1A Sub-State Finals, sending the ladies to state for the first time since their runner-up finish in 2016's Class 2A state tournament.

Nelson, who is Kansas' winningest high school girls basketball coach, was also named one of ten finalists for the top high school girls basketball coaches in America in 2014. His record then was 785-99.

Nelson has three state titles and two runner-up finishes at Olpe.

The Eagles will play Hanover Wednesday at 4:45 p.m. in Dodge City for the first round of this year's state tournament.
