Manhattan-Junction City wrestling dual features father-son coaching matchup
Rivalries are intense, but also feature mutual respect. Thursday night in Junction City, they made room for love.
In a wrestling dual between Manhattan and Junction City High School, a father-son coaching duo squared off. Robert Gonzales is the head coach at Manhattan and has been coaching for 43 years. Tyler Gonzales is his son and currently in his first year as the head coach at Junction City.
Tyler's Blue Jays got the one-point victory over Robert's Indians on Thursday night: 36-35. But Robert found some joy in the defeat.
"I'm happy that there was a winner named Gonzales," Robert said. "I'm proud that there was a winner Gonzales. I'm sad because our program lost."
"I still appreciate my dad, obviously," Tyler said. "He's taught me a lot, taught me how to be a man, be a coach, be an athlete, all of that. And he's obviously a legendary coach in our sport, in our state."
