KPZ Preview: Shawnee Heights feeling adjusted to UKC

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The debut season for Shawnee Heights in the United Kansas Conference went right down the middle.

The Thunderbirds went 5-5 in 2018, but had some trouble against their new league foes, going 2-4 against UKC opponents.

Head coach Jason Swift thinks that was due to a lack of familiarity.

"You could talk about a player, or you could talk about a school or the history of a school, and the kids can't identify with that," Swift said. "We know every one of those games is important. Now that we can match a face to a name, it's going to mean even more during the season."

Shawnee Heights returns 11 starters. The T-Birds believe that experience will shine through this year.

"Last year, we only had three returning starters," senior linebacker Timarance Adams said. "We're very experienced. We know what we're doing. And we're ready to lead the team and go all the way."
