TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Washburn football team held its 2019 spring game on Saturday.

One of the main focuses for the team was getting its youth some experience, especially after graduating quite a few impactful seniors after the 2018 season.

Head coach Craig Schurig said he liked what he saw out of his younger players during the spring season.

"A lot of the young guys got quite a few reps and they did good things," Schurig said. "You could kind of see the light come on for some of them, and how to play how we play.

"Overall the spring went well."

Schurig added the energy his players brought to Yager Stadium on Saturday was a step in the right direction.

Senior running back Zach Willis said he and his teammates' focus in the spring was to "challenge everybody."

"We tried to from the start of this spring," Willis said. "We wanted to make everything a lot more physical (and we) wanted to be a better team, so that was something we really focused on."

The Ichabods open the 2019 season against Lincoln on Sept. 5 at home.
