The Hornets just didn't end up coming out on top of a 68-66 final.
ESU used a 7-2 run to open the second quarter after a stale first, then went into the half trailing the Griffons 27-26.
Missouri Western led 52-45 with 7:33 left when Emporia State went on an 11-2 run to take a 56-54 lead with 4:29 remaining.
Over the final four minutes, there were three ties and five lead changes, but the Griffons' Melia Richardson hit a jumper with .8 left to give Western the win.
Jessica Wayne led Emporia State with 19 points and eight rebounds followed by Addie Lackey with 16 points, Tyra Jones with 12 points and Morgan Laudan with ten points.
