TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Semi-professional basketball is back in Topeka with a familiar name.
The Topeka Sizzlers will begin playing in the American Basketball Association in December. The new team shares the name of Topeka's old Continental Basketball Association squad.
Leading the Sizzlers is former KU great Calvin Thompson. He is the head coach, general manager and a co-owner. As the former Sizzler star assembles his new team, he already knows what kind of players he wants.
"We just want somebody that's still living the dream," Thompson said. "We don't have the NBA budget. Like I said, we're not trying to be the Lakers. We're not going to overpay players. We're going to stay within our means."
Thompson is also making it a point to get the Sizzlers involved in the community. The team already has partnerships set up with the Boys & Girls Club of Topeka, the Topeka Police Department and USDs 501 and 437.
The team held its first tryouts on Monday night. Topeka's first game will be on Dec. 8 in St. Joseph, Mo.
