Dozens present for deadly shooting, TPD says. Asking witnesses to step forward

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Investigators with the Topeka Police Dept. say there were dozens of people around at the time of the overnight shooting that killed Washburn football player Dwane Simmons and wounded former Ichabod Cory Ballentine.


Their preliminary investigation has revealed Simmons and Ballentine were shot during an outdoor social gathering outside a home near the intersection of SW 13th and Lane Street. Officers had responded to that area around 12:45 a.m. and one of them told 13 NEWS that Simmons had died at the scene.

Later in the morning, Ballentine was taken to the the hospital by a private vehicle. Police said he had suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators have not released any information about a possible suspect nor have they said if anyone has been taken into custody.

Investigators are urging anyone who was there and saw what happened to come forward. They can either report it to the Topeka Police Dept. or submit a tip to Shawnee Co. Crime Stoppers at 785-234-0007, where callers can remain anonymous.
