Brown, Karvouni take open titles at 80th annual Jayhawk Tennis Tournament

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The 80th annual Jayhawk Tennis Tournament was held this weekend at the Kossover Tennis Center.

The event featured 99 participants, including some from England, Serbia, Greece and Russia, as well as several past Kansas high school state champions.

In the men's open singles, Kansas City native Alex Brown took the title. The former Illinois University player defeated former Wichita State player Stefan Latinovic in straight sets in the final.

Latinovic paired with WSU teammate Austin Williams in the men's open doubles event, earning a runners-up finish behind Jackson Atherton and Alexander Richards of Tulsa, Okla.

The men's open singles division competed for a $1,000 prize and the men's open doubles team competed for a $500 prize.

The women's open singles finals featured two University of Kansas players in Vasiliki Karvouni of Greece and Sofia Smagina of Russia. Karvouni defeated Smagina in three sets to take the title.

Both were members of this year's Kansas squad that lost to eventual champion Stanford in the 2019 NCAA Tournament's round of 16.
