TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Washburn hasn't been enjoying the Turnpike Tussle meetings in football lately.
The Ichabods have lost six of the last seven matchups with Emporia State, including four straight losses. That means no player on the current Washburn team has beaten the rival Hornets.
"It's driving us for sure, especially building off of last week's loss," senior wide receiver Austen Hubert said. "I mean, we're all pretty fired up. And they're just right down the road, 40-minute trip. At least get them one time before my tenure here."
Head coach Craig Schurig said it's a motivating factor, but still not too much.
"We bring it up like hey, we need to win it back," Schurig said. "We tell them that, but I don't know if it really drives them, the fact that we've necessarily lost four in a row. But they're hungry to get it back."
