WAMEGO, Kan. (WIBW) - Fire at an apartment building in Wamego sent nine families out of their homes Thursday night.
Wamego fire officials say it started around 9 p.m. in a building at 512 Spruce St.
The city's fire chief told 13 NEWS the fire started in an apartment on the second floor in the southwest corner of the building. No one was home at the time.
Neighbors knocked on doors to alert each other. Everyone was out of the building safely before fire crews arrived.
The building housed nine families. One of the its 10 units was vacant. The Red Cross is assisting those who are displaced.
Fire investigators remained at the scene late Thursday, working to determine the cause.
