Over $280,000 was awarded to 345 victims of violent crimes at Thursday's Kansas Crime Victims Compensation Board July meeting.

Between 193 new cases and 152 previously submitted cases, the board is covering $280,391.88 in victim's expenses.

The board is part of the Crime Victim's Compensation program, which was established in 1978 to help victims pay for things like medical treatment, funerals, counseling, and lost wages.

The programs funds are provided through portions of court costs, inmate wages, parole fees, and restitution paid by convicted offenders.
