United Way needs help making sure those in need have a merry Christmas

TOPEKA, Kan (WIBW)-- The United Way of Greater Topeka is looking for holiday heroes.

They are asking individuals, families, businesses, organizations or anyone with a giving heart to help donate to their Christmas Bureau this holiday season.

Participants are encouraged to adopt a family who may not have enough finances for holiday spending.

The traditional Christmas Bureau “adoption” is when adopters are matched with a family profile, including some wish list items. Adopters can then shop, wrap and deliver to the matched family before Christmas.

United Way says they are seeing more participation from the community compared to previous years but they still have over 100 individuals who need adoption.

CEO of Greater Topeka United Way, Jessica Lehnherr, says, "Most of the families that are left are single individuals so that's usually elderly or disabled and home bound and those are our most critical families that we are really needing additional help with this year."

Typical items on the list are basic needs for families such as shoes, clothes, and food.
