Topeka man struck by vehicle, killed in south Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WIBW) -- A 75-year-old Topeka man died Tuesday evening after he was struck by a vehicle while walking on an Interstate in southern Kansas City, Missouri.

According to KCPD, Ronald L. Smith was killed while walking along the inside shoulder of I-49/71 South, near of the Longview Road interchange around 6:15 p.m. when he tried to cross the highway.

A southbound Volkswagen wasn't able to stop in time and struck Smith. He was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

Four of the five lanes of southbound I-49/71 were closed as officers investigated. They reopened around 2 1/2 hours later.

Police added the driver of the Volkswagen was not hurt.
