TOPEKA (WIBW)-- The Topeka community stepped up in a major way to make an impossible goal reality for the United Way of Greater Topeka.
The organization announced Thursday that they have met and surpassed their $2 million fundraising goal, thanks to Topeka donors.
The money raised will be reinvested in the community. The areas of education, financial stability and health are their major focuses.
United Way President and CEO Jessica Lehnherr says the Capital City has a giving spirit.
"Our Topeka community is absolutely outstanding!" Lehnherr said. "This is the first year in a long time that we announced what our campaign goal was and once we knew that we were going to come up a little bit short of reaching that goal we called to the community and we just let them know hey we could use your help." In the last three months that accounted for $190,000! "Our community just stepped up and said this important we want to help."
Lehnherr says her organization always needs more volunteers.
