TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The blue bikes will keep rolling around Topeka at least a little while longer.
Topeka Metro's board voted Tuesday to continue operating its bike share program through June 30, 2020, the end of their fiscal year.
The board previously had voted to park the bikes December 1, citing financial constraints. The move was part of some $800,000 in budget cuts for the upcoming year.
However, the board also created a community task force to explore solutions for continuing Topeka Metro Bikes, whether it remain with the organization or be managed elsewhere.
In deciding to extend the program another seven months, the board cited the task force's monthly meetings to research options. In addition, Topeka Metro is waiting to hear back from bike share companies that could provide management and up-to-date tracking technology at lower costs.
Topeka Metro said it will wait to hear what recommendations come from those efforts before making further announcements regarding the bicycle program.
