TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Shawnee County dispatchers received some sweet treats and a special thanks Wednesday afternoon.

The Topeka Rescue Mission handed out personalized cards and goodie bags to dispatchers, to thank them for their dedication and commitment to helping members of the Mission and those who use the services.

The Mission's Executive Director Barry Beaker says he regularly deals with fire, police and ambulance personnel, but the unsung heroes are dispatchers.

Feaker said the Mission often sees people in crisis.

"We will have individuals that come to us that are not necessarily in the greatest of mood," he said. "Maybe there's a methamphetamine reaction, a heroin reaction, alcohol, some people have mental illness that come to us. Sometimes, unfortunately, we have to call for help. First person we get a hold of is 911. Dispatch."

Feaker says the Mission has two emergency plans - call God and call 911 and they expect both of them to be there when they call.
