NORTHEAST KANSAS (WIBW) - Topeka Public Schools are looking for teachers and bus drivers for the upcoming school year.

13 NEWS looked into what the district is looking for and what’s being done to address problems in the past .

USD 501 and the district's new bus provider, Kansas Central School Bus, held job fairs on the same day to attract potential job candidates.

Topeka Public School administrators were on KU's campus Thursday looking for a specific type of person to hire.

"They should be someone who enjoys children, loves observing and supporting their learning and are willing to bring their heart and their expertise to serve children,” Dr. Beryl New said.

She said district especially needs English language, math and special education teachers. Those new hires can expect new training, in light of recent complaints over staff social media conduct.

"There are often incidents where people may post or do things that come into question, and so we address them when they occur, but it is part of our orientation we also will continue professional development throughout the year,” Dr. New said.

With starting pay around $38,500 to $54,000 dollars, it's a nice fit for Andrea Watts who has been teaching music in KCK for nearly 10 years.

"I know that there is definitely a need in this area, and a lot of times the really good teachers don't stick around out here they go to other places and so I really want to be able to give back to my community,” Watts said.

And as for getting to and from school, Lee Mekus with Kansas Central School Bus, held a separate hiring event.

The new bus provider will be hitting the Topeka streets following a year that saw multiple bus wrecks under the previous bus service.
Mekus said they're placing a greater emphasis on training, and even created a special supervisor position to go out on bus rides with drivers.

"If you don't have a CDL we will provide you the training for that,” Mekus said. “You'll need to be able to pass a background check, we'll have you take a drug test, and once you are trained and are able to get behind the wheel to drive we've got a behind the wheel test we give you as well."
