KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WIBW) - It was a sea of purple, crimson, and blue at the Big XII Tournament on Friday for the semifinal round.
While teams duked it out inside the Sprint Center in the semifinal round, thousands of fans gathered outside to support their team.
For some, Friday’s Big XII Tournament marked their first trip to Kansas City.
Herb Gwaltney, a KU season ticket holder and lifelong fan, has seen the action before.
“I’ve been coming to this tournament since it started,” Gwaltney said.
Fans new and old, Jayhawks, Wildcats, Cyclones, and Mountaineers agree: the atmosphere at the Big XII Tournament does not disappoint.
“Iowa State and K-State and KU fans, they really come out and support this tournament, and it’s a really great thing,” Gwaltney said.
The thousands who packed the Power and Light district from out of state were impressed.
“The atmosphere, I’ve heard it’s insane, and it’s lived up to the hype,” Brady Horner, an Iowa State fan, said.
While the atmosphere is certainly a draw, there’s one reason waves of fans turned out.
“It would be so special, I love the ‘Cats, and they’re doing well this year so I’m excited to see where they go,” Sarah Gromer, a K-State fan, said.
Fans will be back at the Sprint Center and Power and Light on Saturday for the Big Twelve Tournament Championship game at 5 p.m.
