TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - From phone calls to fake websites, there are many ways scammers can take advantage of you.
The Better Business Bureau of Kansas compiled a list of the top 10 scams in the state for 2018, with online purchase scams taking the top spot.
"When you're doing business online, especially with a business that you're maybe not familiar with and you've never done business with them before, make sure you're taking the time to research that company," Denise Groene, state director of the BBB, said.
In 2018, fake websites and fraudulent online shopping scams cost Kansans more than $46,000.
Phishing tactics – whether through email, mail, or phone calls – came in at the second on the list.
"Scammers like to use fear tactics whenever they're trying to push a particular scheme on consumer,” Groene said.
Fake phone calls often warn of a message claiming to be from the IRS or the police.
“Any time you get a phone call and the individual on the other line is claiming to be a government entity of any sort, that should be a red flag for you that this could be a phishing phone call scam," Groene said.
Here is the complete list of the top ten scams of 2018 in Kansas:
1. Online purchases
3. Tax collection
4. Debt collection
6. Government grants
8. Tech support
9. Fake checks
10. Credit cards
Experts say you can protect yourself against falling for scams by slowing down.
"Take your time and trust your gut,” Groene said. “Do your research, and make sure that you're talking to a reputable, honest, trustworthy individual who's representing the business or organization they claim to be with."
The BBB of Kansas says if you don't recognize a phone number calling you, the easiest way to protect yourself from a potential scam is to simply not answer.
